Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. When her father passed away as a Carnival barker at the age of a little girl She was required to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student there. She quit the school she was attending just two years later to pursue acting as a profession. The path was difficult to follow. Although she got a job in New York posing as a woman for a magazine, no theatre jobs were offered to her. Then, after a time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home to the United States and quit the job she was working in. She worked as an usherette during the day and then was a part of the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. The study of drama helped her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
